Having lived on Maui for almost 7 years, I get super excited whenever I see photos of a Haiku Mill Maui destination wedding! The juxtaposition of an old sugar mill with super glam decor makes this wedding one of our very favorites!
Nicole and Taylor met when they were kids growing up in the same small town in Washington. They were high school sweethearts but they went to different colleges and didn’t meet again until many many years later.
A few months before Taylor proposed to Nicole, her father passed away tragically. To honor him and to celebrate his life, they scheduled their wedding on the one year anniversary of his passing. They chose Hawaii for their destination wedding because Taylor’s grandfather lives on the island and they have both spent a considerable amount of time visiting family throughout the years. Plus all of the families and friends are all spread out across the country, selecting a Maui wedding was an easy decision for them.
Nicole has a background in interior design and architecture, and the moment she saw Haiku Mill, she knew that would be the perfect venue for her wedding. Her vision of the wedding day was a Hawaiian Versailles Garden Party. With all the Parisian artifacts scattered throughout the Mill, it definitely fit Nicole’s style to a T. They envisioned sophisticated elegance mixed in with a casual feel, so guests were dressed in more neutral tone including the bridal party. Taylor wore a grey suit with tie and his entourage also wore some variations of grey ensemble. The bridesmaids all wore full length nude sequin gowns which gave a vintage deco feel. Nicole chose a lace mermaid dress with a long cathedral veil.
Being an owner of an interior design firm, Nicole designed and handcrafted all the details of their wedding day – from the stationeries to the wedding website. No details were overlooked. Even though the Haiku Mill is up on the hill, the ocean has a significant meaning to both Taylor and Nicole. Right before the ceremony, they went down to the beach to spend some time alone and take a few portraits together.
