Wedding Gifts for Destination Weddings
At the last wedding that I did, the groom’s side of the family was all from Australia. The mother of the groom came up to me and we started talking about the wedding. Then she told me how some of her families and relatives who weren’t able to make it to Maui, gave her a few wedding gifts to bring along on her trip for the lovely couple. The gifts were all beautifully wrapped and she didn’t think to ask what those gifts were, so she just packed them carefully in her carry-on bag.
When she got to the airport in Sydney, she ran her bags through the x-ray machine and was told by security to open those gifts. She had no choice but to open them. It ended up that they were a few sets of cheese platters with the cheese cutting boards and knives! Mother of the groom asked security if they would just confiscate the knives only and let her bring the rest of the platter with her on the plane, but they said NO! :(
For all of you destination couples and families, please make sure that all wedding gifts are sent to the couples’ home either before or after the wedding, instead of bringing them to the destination. You will be surprised how much stuff the couple have to pack for the wedding. Better yet, just do what Chinese people do, give out monetary gifts!
When Darren and I had our destination wedding 4-1/2 years ago, someone gave us a briefcase full of flatware. Yes, it was literally a briefcase but we had absolutely no room in our suitcase, plus it had forks and knives in it, so we couldn’t bring it back to San Francisco with us and had to donate it to the Salvation Army.
Another guest gave us a ceramic bowl, and it fell off of the hotel bell cart when we checked out and it broke into pieces. So we had to throw that away before we even left the resort.
If you really want to bring a gift, just be sure they are non-breakable and small enough for the couple to pack it home. They will really appreciate it.
