Defining Your Outdoor Wedding Space

I am very excited to share with you this post by Shirley Tan, the President of American Bridal.  She has over 20 years experience in the wedding industry. She has been awarded the prestigious American retailer of the year award in 2007, as well as been featured on the hit show Designing Spaces (Bridal Edition).  Most recently she has been working on a book that has just been released titled “The Bridal Handbook”.

A wedding is a wonderful event that you and your spouse will remember for the rest of your lives.    Everything about your wedding should be a reflection of both of your personalities, passions and comforts.  These things are unique to each individual. It’s completely normal to be overwhelmed when trying to put your wedding together, but don’t fret, everything will fall neatly into place with time and dedication.  Here are a few tips to help you get started defining your outdoor wedding spot:

The “Altar”
Outdoor weddings are always a favorite among brides.  However, it is important not to get lost in the great outdoors, this is why it is extremely important to define your space and make it your own.  First, pick out the spot where you and your groom will get officially married, commonly known as the altar.  It’s important to mark this space with something visually stunning for both of you.  For example with a destination wedding, rent a bamboo canopy.  Decorate it with fabrics, flowers, grasses and/or ornaments:

Try weaving flowers through it and hang long crystals or pearls or leis dripping from the outside edges.  And voila, you have just begun to define your romantic space.  If you’re getting married at dusk , you can also line the walkway toward the canopy with flameless candles, creating an even more dramatic effect.

Guest Seating

Once you have delineated a spot for the “altar” it is easy to decide where your guests will be sitting.  If your guest list is quite large, you don’t only have one option (which typically is make the rows go as far back as humanly possible).  Try expanding the chairs out further, think semi-circle.  This creates a cozier experience and lets your entire guest list feel more included in that special moment where you two become one.  If your wedding party is small, then you have a bit more room to play and still have everyone be included.  Try toying around with the seating.  Make large short rows, or small long ones, you decide.

I hope you these tips inspired you to think outside the box when creating your magical event. — Shirley Tan
